8th Sir Michael Weir Annual Lecture: Rt Hon Charles Clarke

Sir Michael Weir was the founding Chairman in 1990 of the British Egyptian Society and continued until 2006 when he handed over to The Rt. Hon Baroness Symons of Vernham Dean, shortly before his death. Our annual Flagship lecture is a tribute to Sir Michael and to Lady Weir who were liked and admired by friends in Egypt and the United Kingdom. Previous lecturers have been Lord Patten, Sir Magdi Yacoub, Sir Sherard Cowper Coles, Sir Derek Plumbly, Dr. Mostafa Hegazy, Sir Dominic Asquith and Mr. Amre Moussa

This year’s event will be given by the Rt Hon Charles Clarke, the former Home Secretary and Secretary of State for Education and Skills. He was a member of parliament for 13 years, leaving the Commons in 2010. Since November 2010 he has been VisitingProfessor of Politics and Faith in the Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion at Lancaster University and currently is a Trustee of the British University in Egypt. In 2012 Mr. Clarke was a Keynote Speaker at our Education Conference, held jointly in Cairo University and SOAS via a video link. His talk is titled: –“The future relationship between the UK and Egypt in a rapidly changing world”
