DESCRIPTION:The 9th Sir Michael Weir Annual Lecture to be delivered by Dame Minouche Shafik\nRSVP HERE \nSir Michael Weir was the founding Chairman in 1990 of the British Egyptian Society and continued until 2006 when he handed over to The Rt. Hon Baroness Symons of Vernham Dean\, shortly before his death. This\, our Flagship Event\, celebrates the warmth and the affection in which Sir Michael was held by his friends and colleagues in our Society. \nThis year’s event will given by the highly respected Director of the LSE\, Dame Minouche Shafik. \nDame Nemat Talaat Shafik\, DBE (Arabic: نعمت شفيق; also known as Minouche Shafik) (born 5 February 1962) is an Egyptian-born British-American economist who served as the Deputy Governor of the Bank of England and has served as the director of the London School of Economics since September 2017. \nBorn in Alexandria\, Egypt\, Dame Minouche studied at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and the London School of Economics before receiving her doctorate from St Antony’s College\, Oxford. Dame Minouche served as the Permanent Secretary of the Department for International Development from March 2008 to March 2011\, when she went on to serve as the Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund. \nShe joined the Bank of England as its first Deputy Governor on Markets and Banking and the Member of the bank’s Monetary Policy Committee on 1 August 2014 and resigned in February 2017. On 12 September 2016\, it was announced that Dame Minouche had been appointed as the next Director of the London School of Economics\, replacing sociologist Craig Calhoun. She took up the post on September 1\, 2017. \nThe title of his Lecture will be “Why we need a new Social Contract: Lessons for Egypt”. It promises to be an enthralling evening. This is the 9th scheduled lecture and the 1st to be delivered by a Dame\, and not before time! \nThe event is due to take place on Wednesday 20th February 2019 in The Waterloo Room of the Institute of Directors\, 116 Pall Mall\, London SW1Y 5ED. Doors open at 6.30pm ; the lecture si due to start at from 7.00pm until 8.30pm (including Q & A) followed by a Reception. Dress Code is Lounge Suit. \nThe Chairman\, Trustees and the Supervisory Board look forward to welcoming you to what promises to be a most informative evening.
