SUMMARY:Music from Egypt and Sudan Oxford Maqam
DESCRIPTION:Music from Egypt and Sudan Oxford Maqam\nMARSM is proud to present a captivating musical showcase in the heart of London – a celebration of Egypt’s and Sudan’s most vibrant and inspiring artists! Join us on a journey from traditional folklore to alternative rock\, retro-pop to roots and more! The showcase includes 5 exciting events featuring Dina El Wedidi (Egypt)\, Alsarah (Sudan/NY)\, Egyptian Project (Egypt)\, Rasha (Sudan)\, Cairokee (Egypt) and Oxford Maqam (Egypt/UK). \nFor the first event of the series we are happy to present Oxford Maqam Ensemble in a night dedicated to recreating the best classics of Arabic Egyptian music. \nOxford Maqam’s brand of music – recreations of Egyptian and Levantine songs from the mid 1800s through to the early cinema era – offers an opportunity to listen to an enchanting repertoire now seldom performed. This was a period of creativity and artistic licence in which Arabic sound recordings set the musical tone across the Eastern Mediterranean and Arab world. Oxford Maqam’s musicians are some of just a handful in the world exploring these repertoires with authenticity. Their recent performances include live at the BBC\, the London Jazz Festival\, the Tabernacle for Nour Festival and St Paul’s Cathedral. Performing internationally\, they are about to go on their second tour in Turkey. After the resounding success of their most recent collaboration with the King’s Philharmonic Orchestra\, this concert will be a return to the more intimate sound of their chamber ensemble or ‘takht’. \nFor full details of the programme: www.marsm.co.uk\nTickets: £11.74 – £12.80 available from Eventbrite.\nSponsored by: Alaraby TV Network and hosted by the London Middle East Institute
