SUMMARY:"Crossing the Nile" Solo Painting Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:“Crossing the Nile” Solo Painting Exhibition\nOpening: Thursday January 21\, 2016\, 6:30 p.m.\, Exhibition duration: January 21-24\, 2016\nEgyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau\, 4\, Chesterfield Gardens\, Mayfair – London W1J 5BG\n\nAbout the Artist\nAndreas Georgiadis was born in Thessaloniki in 1972. He lives and works in Athens. He studied Graphic Arts at the School of Graphic Arts and Art Studies (at the Technical Educational Institute of Athens). He received a fellowship from the Greek National Scholarship Foundation to study illustration at the Instituts d’ Arts Visuels in Orleans\, France. He was taught painting by Giorgos Rorris at the Apopsi Centre of Arts and Letters (2001-2002) and at the Simion Art Group (2002-2006). \nHe has had nine solo exhibitions and has taken part in many major group exhibitions\, both in Greece and overseas. There are works by Andreas Georgiadis in public and private collections\, such as Bank of Greece\, museums and Embassies. He has illustrated books and record covers. He belongs to the art group of Mikri Arktos. \nExhibition\nAndreas Georgiadis’ painting exhibition entitled“Crossing the Nile”\, is presented at the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau in London. At the invitation of the Embassy of the Arab Republic in London\, under the auspices of H.E. Mr. Nasser Ahmed Kamel\, the Ambassador of the Egyptian Embassy in London and Honorary President of The British Egyptian Society\, Andreas Georgiadispresents a group of works created last 4 years\, whose theme is the great river\, which joins the north with the south of the Egyptian territories. The exhibition presented first time at Cairo Opera House\, on May 2013. In this show the artist includes some remarkable works from his last solo exhibition entitled “The Alexandria Quartet” which was presented at Bibliotheca Alexandrina\, October 2014\, as well as some completely new paintings he made for this special show. \nAndreas uses visual arts to narrate the journey of a Greek traveler in the 19th century. Starting out from Alexandria\, at the time when Lawrence Durrell wrote his well known “Alexandria Quartet” the traveler traverses the Nile\, making specific intermediate stops: Port Said\, Damietta\, Cairo\, Giza\, Saqqara\, Luxor\, the Valley of Kings\, Karnak\, Edfu\, Abu Simbel\, Aswan. \nTwenty works\, all ink on paper\, record images of this imaginary journey into the hinterland\, impressions and memories\, creating a subjective geography of memory\, lost in time and in the history of Egyptian civilisation. Renowned sights\, such as the Pyramids; the Sphynx at the time it was being excavated; the palace of Hatshepsut; the Colossi of Memnon; the temple at Abu Simbel before it was transported to its current location; the Mosque of Ibn Tulun\, the oldest mosque in Cairo\, all exist alongside simple everyday images: midnight walk in Corniche – Alexandria\, fishermen along the banks of the Nile\, a Copticchurch\, the sail of a felucca as it sails the river waters\, a small oasis in the middle of nowhere. \nThe exhibition is organised by the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau of the Egyptian Embassy in London\, and the cultural Attaché of the Egyptian Embassy in London Dr. Waleed El-Mahy and falls under the auspices of H.E. Mr. Nasser Ahmed Kamel\, the Ambassador of the Egyptian Embassy in London.
